Job Description

The Building Inspector III, under general supervision, conducts inspections.rooms at new or existing construction to verify compliance with the North Carolina Building Codes. Inspects all phases of the installation and construction methods used. Responsible for communicating to the public interpretations and potential violations of the North Carolina Building Codes. Processes clerical work with daily inspection reports, worksheets, and other documentation as needed.

Electrical Positionsorganized duties


  • Conduct field inspections of all phases of new and existing electrical wiring to meet safety standards, National Electrical Codes and Local Electrical Codes.
  • Inspect electrical work on additions and remodel work.
  • Inspect change outs of heat and A/C, and hot water heaters.
  • Perform public contact by phone with owners and contractors, giving interpretations and requirements regarding the North Carolina Electrical Code.
  • Inform homeowners and contractors of work to be corrected to meet the North Carolina Electrical Code.
  • Review commercial building plans for compliance with the National Electrical Codes of the North Carolina State Building Code.
  • Fill out reports of daily inspections and corrections that need to be performed.
  • Fill in hours worked on timecards.
  • Answer phone calls from the public and contractors for jobs scheduled for the next working day.
  • Maintain County vehicle and personal appearance as a representative of the county in a professional manner.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Building Positionsorganized duties
  • Perform field inspections of building, plumbing, and mechanical installations in new, existing, or remodeled buildings for conformance with safety standards, codes, and ordinances.
  • Enforce the current adopted Building, Mechanical and Plumbing Codes of North Carolina.
  • Inspect building, plumbing and mechanical installations during all phases of construction to ensure that these structures meet the requirements of the North Carolina Building Codes.
  • Check plans and specifications for building, plumbing and mechanical installations.
  • Perform public contact by phone with owners and contractors, giving interpretations and requirements regarding building code.
  • Receive complaints regarding interpretation.
  • Complete daily reports and daily work sheets.
  • Check files Containing proper permits and for proper inspections.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.



Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: High School Diploma or an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED), with vocational training and major course work in construction trades, and five (5) years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Possession of a valid drivers license and the ability to maintain a safe driving record as defined by the Union County Vehicle Use Policy.
  • Electrical Positions: Maintenance of an Electrical Level III Standard Certificate through the North Carolina Department of Insurance.
  • Building Positions: Maintenance of a Level I Standard Certificate through the North Carolina Department of Insurance in Building, Plumbing, and Mechanical classifications.



Preferred Qualifications

Liciguals or Certifications:

  • Electrical Positions:
    Plumbing Level I and Mechanical Level I Standard Certificate through the North Carolina Department of Insurance.
    Unlimited Electrical Contracting License issued by the North Carolina Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors.



Physicalimina Demands

Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment like telephone, calculator, electrical diagram, and other electrical tools. Must be physically able to operate a truck. Must be physically able to use hand tools, to climb, and to lift. Also required to walk to and through job sites, excavations, and constructions.

Work Environment

Work is performed in occupied dwellings as well as new structures under construction. Adverse weather conditions such as cold, heat and rain will be present on construction sites.
