Pharmacist Board Inspector

This position is 100% remote with 75% being travel and 25% working from your home office. You will need to report to Helena once a quarter. If so, then you may be interested in the Montana Board of Pharmacy Inspector position within the Department of Labor & Industry.

Essential Functions: As a Pharmacist Board Inspector you will:

  • Perform annual in-state inspections and prepare inspection reports for community and institutional pharmacies, limited-service pharmacies, outpatient surgery centers, wholesale distributors, medical gas facilities, medical practitioner dispensers, veterinary retail facilities, and veterinary certified euthanasia agencies.
  • Provide licensure verification for individuals and facilities licensed by the Board of Pharmacy.
  • Perform controlled substance accountability audits.
  • Assist with Montana Prescription Drug Registry (MPDR) activities.
  • Verify compliance with state and federal statutes and regulations related to the practice of pharmacy, controlled substances, compounding, immunizations, dispensing, wholesale distribution, including supply chain track and trace requirements, and other activities, certifications, or endorsements as needed.
  • Cooperate with Department personnel and state and federal authorities on licensee issues related to inspections, compliance, complaints, compounding, diversion of controlled substances, or other license disciplinary matters.
  • Perform other inspection/investigational procedures as needed.
  • Research, analyze, and answer technical and regulatory inquiries, and collaborate with staff to respond to licensees, state and federal agencies, other stakeholders, and the public.
  • Collaborate with Department staff on multiple regulatory and technical service offerings.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally through written and verbal communications.
  • Provide a high level of customer service to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties and projects assigned.

  • Practice of Pharmacy Understanding of concepts, theories, and practices of pharmacy, with the ability to learn and interpret the broad scope of state and federal statutes, regulations, and guidelines that govern and impact the pharmacy profession.
  • Compliance Inspect, monitor, identify, resolve, and provide education on state and federal pharmacy compliance issues and laws, including prescription drug monitoring programs, and ensure confidentiality.

  • Travel Ability to travel extensively around the state of Montana, including Eastern Montana.

  • Presentation Expertise Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in public settings by delivering clear, engaging, and informative presentations tailored to diverse audiences, including staff, leadership, and external stakeholders.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS: The position of inspector for the Board of Pharmacy requires the potential to work in all weather conditions but also accommodates a flexible work schedule. This allows the inspector to schedule their work around changing weather conditions, priorities, meetings, and other demands.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Candidates with a strong mix of the attributes listed in the above Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) in the practice of pharmacy, with at least 5-years of experience, and with current and/or previous leadership, pharmacist-in-charge, and/or other management experience are preferred. Candidates should clearly describe how their experience and education meet the identified KSAs and provide examples in their cover letter that demonstrate their qualifications. Candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (BSPharm) or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) from an accredited school of pharmacy.
  • Be currently licensed as a pharmacist in good standing with the Montana Board of Pharmacy and/or by a board of pharmacy or equivalent in another state. The pharmacist license shall never have been suspended or revoked by any board of pharmacy or equivalent in any state.
  • If not licensed as a pharmacist in Montana, then licensure must be obtained upon hire.
  • Extensive travel around the state of Montana is required, including Eastern Montana. Travel to Helena is required to meet business needs. A state vehicle will be provided.
